- Encyclopedia Brittanica Online article -- cited, but not indicated as a quote
- Parade Magazine "Who Is the World's Worst Dictator?" #7; 11 February 2007 -- not linked to nor cited
- Who's Who of Southern Africa -- cited, but not indicated as a quote
Unlike some of the other cases of plagiarism we've looked at, there actually is some apparently-original material in this article. In the opening paragraph, only 1 of 4 sentences is a direct non-attributed quote. In the second paragraph, the first two sentences have had some copy-editing and light re-wording. Most impressive is the third paragraph, which appears to be wholly original -- and thus has no citation at all.
On May 28th, following the initial posting of this page, the copied sentence in the first paragraph was lightly reworded. No indication was given that any of the other quoted material was quoted, nor was a link added to the Parade Magazine article.

Robert Mugabe is the President of Zimbabwe since December 31, 1987. Zimbabwe is the former British Colony known as Rhodesia. [1] He violently oppresses anyone who opposes his government. He has cracked down on dissidents and violently seized farms from white (and many black) farm owners. A black nationalist of Marxist persuasion, he eventually established one-party rule in his country, becoming Executive President of Zimbabwe in 1987.[2] |

In his 27 years in power, he has gone from the poster boy for the "New Africa", ruled by educated, democratic leaders, to the bottom of the heap. Under his rule the health and well-being of his people have dropped dramatically, with his arbitrary arrests and torture of anyone considered to be an opponent. According to the World Health Organization, Zimbabwe has the world’s shortest life expectancy - 37 years for men and 34 for women. It also has the greatest percentage of orphans (about 25%, says UNICEF) and the worst annual inflation rate (1,281% as of last month). He last allowed an election in 2002 but “won” only after having his leading opponent arrested for treason. |
Robert Mugabe once was hailed as a symbol of the new Africa, but under his rule the health and well-being of his people have dropped dramatically, which is as much an abuse of human rights as arbitrary arrest and torture. Mugabe came into power with the help of China and North Korea. The UK and the UN did nothing, as Rhodesia fought off a Communist-backed attack supported by not only China and North Korea but the Soviet Union and East Germany as well.[citation needed] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
