Andrew Marr

He is a great historian - I've read History of Modern Britain several times now, but haven't read Making of yet. I actually bought that one for my father a few months ago and have been meaning to nick it borrow it for a while now. You're right of course that Hitler wasn't the reason the British Empire was dismantled, I meant to point out that racism had been used to justify the Empire since its inception and after fighting Hitler for nearly six years (even though the British government's motives to go to war weren't originally because of Nazi racialism) it was much harder to justify it to the public. The book is an interesting and easy read, I picked up the hardback at WHS for £5. The racism aspect is a difficult because I don't think it was a conscious - of course there has always been the nationalist 'we are better than the rest' but I go along with the James/Jan Morris (Pax Britannica trilogy) view that a lot of the Empire was actually based on the (arrogant) idea of enlightenment, especially through Christianity. Although slavery played a part in the early years it was more an economic than a racial institution as many black slave traders were treated as equals with the whites, sent their sons to be educated in Britain and lived with their merchant partners. The whole slavery thing is much more complex than the recent racism. I just re-listened to a Dan Carlin podcast on the evils of slavery this morning, it may not still be available for free but I could email the mp3 if you like. Yeah, "spread Christianity to the uncivilised" etc. I'd say British nationalism's still strongly associated with 'we're better than the rest' school of though but then that's a strong trait of right-wing nationalism in general. I could describe myself as English nationalist but it wouldn't be that accurate as that's purely an easy way of describing my views on devolution, which are only there because of devolution in the rest of the UK. Sorry dude, but I am going to call bullshit on that. At the risk of rehashing old scores you were pretty silent when Nx, as a mod, made suggestion he was trying to get rid of me and his repeated blocking over a 48 period. Plus his borderline removal of my rights. Not to mention mods are not "special" kinds of users and I used no mod rights of any kind. While I have pushed for some sort of mod censure/removal tool for rogue mods comments like "fuck off" are not particularly surprising when coming from me and if Brx wants to complain he has that avenue. Glad you enjoyed it. In the UK Radio 4 (speech radio) is looked on as mostly middle class and middle/old aged, but it's where you find the most intelligent broadcasting. Melvyn Bragg is in his 60s but has been a presenter of arts programmes for many years. Thanks, it wasn't a crisis but the old dear had elevated blood pressure and a higher pulse rate and managed to get an appointment at very short notice which meant me having to drive her rather than arsilng around on the internet. But fuck it, health is so much more important nowadays. I had a hospital visit yesterday for an ultrasound to rule out suspected gallstones. This isn't for you to create a seperate "bot" account. Rather, the "Ninja" right let's you make your main account into a "bot" account when you go on a minor edit rampage. Yes, you can also create a bot script to run if you like, but it's more about keeping recent changes free of massive amounts of "minor" edits than about your account actually having bot-like powers. What about the history of rational thought and atheism? There's a bit of history in our atheism article but I think that we could do with a fuller treatment. Starting off with some of the great classical thinkers, moving on through the medieval period to the enlightenment and then the development of modern atheism.
