Xenophobia

Xenophobia is the hatred/contempt or fear (but usually hatred, the way we mean it) of outsiders. What particular kind of outsiders is up to the individual xenophobe, but it is most often used to refer to foreigners. However, for a particularly provincial person, it could also refer to people from outside the particular state/province, county, or town.

Few people will ever admit to being xenophobic, instead trying to pretend that it is some particular, justified concern that makes them want to keep all foreigners away.

Sadly, xenophobia was a social norm up until the 1950's, where the Civil Rights Movement thankfully got rid of that time in history. For some reason, Darwin being racist is a reason that evolution is false for some hypocritical conservatives.

Of course, racism or nationalism and xenophobia tend to go together.

At this point in the United States, one major party feels the need to cater to all the xenophobes it can, in the name of "homeland security."
